Seen by over 30 million people around the world, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus’ global smash hit musical MAMMA MIA! is celebrating 6 sold-out years at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway, and is currently playing record-breaking engagements in Las Vegas and on National Tour in the United States.  The original West End production has played more than 3,500 performances, an international tour has played in more than 30 foreign cities, and the feature film of MAMMA MIA!, produced by Judy Craymer and Gary Goetzman, will be released on July 18, 2008

Meryl Streep leads an all-star cast in the feature-film adaptation of the beloved musical that has been seen by more than 30 million people in 160 cities and 8 languages around the world. Bringing the timeless lyrics and melodies of iconic super group ABBA to movie audiences, Summer 2008 is the season for MAMMA MIA!

The three women who created the worldwide smash stage hit -global producer Judy Craymer, writer Catherine Johnson and director Phyllida Lloyd -repeat their roles in bringing this joyful, musical story to the big screen. The MAMMA MIA! film is produced by Judy Craymer and Gary Goetzman.

Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper join Streep in this celebration of a mother, a daughter and three possible dads.

An independent, single mother who owns a small hotel on an idyllic Greek island, Donna (Streep) is about to let go of Sophie (Seyfried), the spirited daughter she’s raised alone. For Sophie’s wedding, Donna has invited her two lifelong best girlfriends-practical and no-nonsense Rosie (Julie Walters) and wealthy, multi-divorcee Tanya (Baranski) – from her one-time backing band, Donna and the Dynamos. But Sophie has secretly invited three guests of her own.

On a quest to find the identity of her father to walk her down the aisle, she brings back three men from Donna’s past to the Mediterranean paradise they visited 20 years earlier. Over 24 chaotic, magical hours, new love will bloom and old romances will be rekindled on this lush island full of possibilities.

Inspired by the storytelling magic of ABBA’s songs from “Dancing Queen” and “S.O.S.” to “Money, Money, Money” and “Take a Chance on Me,” MAMMA MIA! is a celebration of mothers and daughters, old friends and new family found.

TOP GIRLS ON NY1

NY1 CALLS MTC’s TOP GIRLS

“MIND-BLOWING, SPLENDID, & DAZZLING”

NY1’s “On Stage”

Excerpted Review of TOP GIRLS

Reviewed by David Cote

It’s an election year, so I have to ask: Does Manhattan Theatre Club’s production of TOP GIRLS have Hillary Clinton in mind? There’s a restaurant in the first act of Caryl Churchill‘s MIND-BLOWING play, which is dubbed ‘Casa Bianca’ – Italian for “white house.” That’s not in the script; it’s designer Tom Pye‘s invention. Certainly this dark, twisty play about the thorny intersection of women and power should be required viewing for any female politician aspiring to the Oval Office. Scratch that: THIS SPLENDID WORK OUGHT TO BE SEEN BY EVERYONE.

Full of stylistic gear shifting and dense ideas, TOP GIRLS is not easy stuff …, so BRAVO TO MTC FOR PUTTING IT ON. Churchill’s play mutates in each act, going from trans-historical fantasia to gut-wrenching naturalism. Far from a feel-good feminist romp, the playwright offers a pessimistic critique of female empowerment in capitalist society.

The celebrated first act takes place in the aforementioned restaurant, where Thatcherite businesswoman Marlene-PLAYED BY THE GUTSY AND RIVETING Elizabeth Marvel-is celebrating her recent promotion at the Top Girls Employment Agency. Marlene’s guests are a surreal group of distinguished women from Victorian times, medieval Japan, a 9th-century legendary female Pope and a figure from a Brueghel painting.

The play unfolds, DAZZLINGLY portraying the loss of social cohesion with individual upward mobility. Marlene epitomizes this paradox; years ago, Marlene left her unwanted child, Angie, played by Martha Plimpton, in the care of her working-class sister, Joyce, Marisa Tomei. Now Angie is a severely disturbed teen, Marlene is sliding into alcoholism and Joyce is a bitter, poor single mother.

The middle act is sharp and satirical, snapshots at the Top Girls employment agency. NOT TO BE MISSED are the fine supporting performances by Ana Reeder, Jennifer Ikeda, Mary Catherine Garrison and Mary Beth Hurt. These women’s lipstick smiles conceal predatory teeth.

TOP GIRLS IS A TRIUMPHAL END TO THE SEASON, shining under British director James Macdonald’s SMART, HARD-NOSED STAGING. Even 26 years after its premiere, the play remains an EXCITING, disturbing study of what women give up to get ahead.

INFORMATION ON TOP GIRLS

TOP GIRLS features Mary Catherine Garrison (Rabbit Hole, Assassins), three-time Tony Awardâ nominee Mary Beth Hurt (A Delicate Balance, The World According to Garp), Jennifer Ikeda (As You Like It), four-time Obie Award winner Elizabeth Marvel (Seascape and An American Daughter on Broadway), Drama Desk Award winner Martha Plimpton (Shining City at MTC, The Coast of Utopia), Ana Reeder (No Country For Old Men, Sight Unseen), and Academy Award® winner Marisa Tomei (My Cousin Vinny and In the Bedroom, seen on Broadway in Salomé) .

TOP GIRLS marks the Broadway debut of Caryl Churchill‘s groundbreaking work. At the Top Girls Employment Agency in London in the early 1980s, Marlene has just been appointed head of the firm. But as this ambitious career woman celebrates her achievements, can we applaud her values? This bold and ingenious work from the singularly talented author of Far Away and Cloud Nine offers one of the theatre’s most honest portraits of what it means to be a woman in the modern world.

The creative team for TOP GIRLS includes Tom Pye (scenic design), Laura Bauer (costume design), Christopher Akerlind (lighting design), Darron L West (sound design), Matthew Herbert (original music), Paul Huntley (hair and wig design) and Elizabeth Smith (dialect consultant).

Under the leadership of Artistic Director Lynne Meadow and Executive Producer Barry Grove, MTC has become one of the country’s most prominent and prestigious theatre companies. MTC productions have earned a total of 16 Tony Awards and five Pulitzer Prizes as well as numerous other awards. Renowned MTC productions include LoveMusik; Blackbird; Translations; Shining City; Rabbit Hole; Doubt; Proof; The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife; Kimberly Akimbo; Love! Valour! Compassion!; Sylvia; Four Dogs and a Bone; Putting It Together; Lips Together, Teeth Apart; Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune; Crimes of the Heart; and Ain’t Misbehavin’

In 2003, MTC reopened Broadway’s landmark, long-neglected Biltmore Theatre, following a two-year, $35 million capital campaign. In addition to the Biltmore, MTC operates two theatres at New York City Center, its Off-Broadway home since 1984.

During Meadow’s sabbatical this season, Daniel Sullivan, a close associate of MTC and director of several Manhattan Theatre Club productions (Rabbit Hole, Brooklyn Boy, Sight Unseen, Proof, Psychopathia Sexualis), is serving as Acting Artistic Director. Sullivan will continue consulting with Meadow and MTC’s artistic staff on the planning of the 2007-2008 season. The Broadway premiere of THE 39 STEPS opened earlier this season at Roundabout Theatre Company’s American Airlines Theatre to deliriously ecstatic reviews.   Ben Brantley, New York Times, called the production, “Absurdly enjoyable!  This gleefully theatrical riff on Hitchcock’s film is fast and frothy, performed by a cast of four that seems like a cast of thousands.  The actors themselves seem to be having a helluva good time.  As does the audience.”   Clive Barnes, New York Post, pronounced THE 39 STEPS “Inventively astonishing, riotous & marvelous.”  Joe Dziemianowicz, Daily News, exclaimed, “Hitchcock probably never imagined his thriller had the makings of a hilarious comedy, but this show is a dizzy delight and an ingenious spoof, inventively directed by Maria Aitken. DENVER CENTER THEATRE COMPANY

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR KENT THOMPSON

FEATURED ON NPR’S “WEEKEND EDITION”

Kent Thompson, artistic director of the Denver Center Theatre Company, was interviewed recently on NPR’s “Weekend Edition Saturday.”

THE COMPLETE INTERVIEW

During Kent Thompson’s three years as artistic director, Colorado’s Denver Center Theatre Company has become one of a handful of regional theaters regularly staging full-fledged productions of new work.

When Thompson took the position, he had two goals: to serve the local community and to develop new plays.

The first thing he did was to look at what plays the company had done before; he discovered that out of 264 productions, only a handful had been written by women.

“I thought, that’s really strange because the American theater of the last 25 years has been the renaissance of writing by women,” says Thompson. “I knew we needed to correct that right away, so we started doing three or four plays a year by women.”

Thompson also noticed the Denver Center had done very few plays by Latinos, even though Denver’s population is about one-third Hispanic. So now they’re doing one Latino play a year, including Lydia, by Octavio Solis, which Thompson shepherded into creation, first commissioning it, then giving it a professional reading and finally staging a full production – an unusual level of involvement for an artistic director.

The definitive battle of the sexes springs to life in this Tony Award®-nominated classic by Christopher Hampton. For long-time friends and occasional lovers Vicomte de Valmont (Daniels) and Marquise de Merteuil (Linney), love is simply a game of chess. But in a few false moves, they’re about to find themselves locked in the ultimate checkmate. Filled with seduction, betrayal, and plenty of illicit passion, this dark comedy paints the pre-Revolutionary French aristocracy in all its cynicism and decadence.

Les Liaisons Dangereuses was nominated for nine Outer Critic’s Circle Awards including Outstanding Revival of a Play, Outstanding Director of a Play (Rufus Norris) and Outstanding Actor & Actress in a Play (Laura Linney, Ben Daniels).
